At the beginning of the film, four typical hedge forms are presented: the Knicks in Schleswig-Holstein, the tree hedges of the Alpine countries, hedge-like bushes in flowing waters, and the land-limiting hedges in Lesesteinwällen in the German Mittelgebirge.
Earlier, hedges were also used to produce firewood. Through frequent pruning hedges grew mainly into shrubs that tolerate cutting. Examples shown include sloe, Weissdorn, blackberry, elderberry and hedgerow. The impenetrable thicket is often strengthened by climbing plants, creating ideal shelters for numerous birds and insects.
The dense foliage also provides a habitat for animals on the ground.
These animals and plants are interdependent and live in an equilibrium. This balance can be disturbed or even destroyed by human intervention. Land consolidation resulted in a structural impoverishment of the landscape, the consequences of which soon became apparent as wind and water erosion.
At the end of the film the narration mentions learning from the mistakes of the past, and that the importance of hedges is henceforth taken into account in planning and land consolidation measures.
